Phenol-formaldehyde resole resins

Thermal Insulation

Phenolic resins are used as the main binder for thermal insulation materials made from such mineral fibers as glass, slag or basalt. Products from mineral wool are widely used in industrial and residential construction, for wall and soffit insulation as well for insulation of piping and equipment. Mineral wool is used in marine applications and high-rise construction works for its high fire resistance.

The greater part of industrial hydroponic substrates is also made from special low-toxicity phenol-formaldehyde resins.

Phenolic resins are made using organic and inorganic catalysts. Catalysts selection can focus on the most important insulation properties suitable for specific applications.

Catalyst type and resin parameters are customized to the customer’s manufacturing technological capabilities. Some grades of resins require neutralization of the free formaldehyde directly at the customer’s site.

Wood Boards
Phenol-formaldehyde resins are used to manufacture plywood, chip and  fibre board, wood laminated plastic, oriented strand board (OSB) and laminated veneer lumber (LVL). Phenol-formaldehyde resins provide high strength, water and  weathering resistance, low formaldehyde emission from wood materials.

Our R&D experts can choose resins and glues with phenol-formaldehyde as a base element modelling customer’s production processes in order to achieve optimal reological properties of the glue, required speed and curing of resins/glues and the best pressing conditions making wood composites with necessary physico-chemical and ecological parameters.

Abrasives
Phenolic resins are used in the manufacture of all types of abrasive tools:

• grinding wheels;
• cutoff wheels;
• snagging wheels;
• coated abrasives;
• fibreglass mesh.

Owing to strong adhesion to abrasive grains, our products give abrasive tools excellent strength and performance characteristics. Abrasive tools on a high-strength bakelite bond operate under heavy loads and at high cutting speeds.

Fibreglass mesh is the reinforcing base saturated with phenol-formaldehyde resins for the manufacture of abrasive wheels. The major purpose of the fibreglass mesh is to provide additional mechanical strength which allows to operate the abrasive wheel at high working speeds.

Phenolic resins for sandpaper provide elasticity and flexibility depending on the grain and excellent adhesion to the backing material.

The range of products is customized to meet customer’s technological capabilities.

Refractories
Egida grade liquid resole resins are mainly used as a liquid binder in the compound of unshaped refractories (tapholes). Resins can be applied either individually or as a hardener in mixtures with Novolak resins. The range of products is customized to meet specific customer’s technical production needs.
Oil Production – Repair & Insulation, Major Workover
Resoil F grade phenol-formaldehyde resins are used for  repair and isolation of wells and mines. Resins are cured with acid hardeners. The composition is individually selected by our R&D team based on given requirements for downhole conditions and polymer stone strength.
Electrical Insulation
Phenolic resins provide high mechanical strength and electrical insulation properties of electrotechnical sheet materials. Varnish resins composed of the phenolic resin solution in various alcohols are used for electrical insulation. Phenol-formaldehyde varnishes are widely used to impregnate and coat natural and synthetic fibrous materials. Elasticity of resol-resin-based coatings is higher than that of coatings based on pure Novolak resins. The best effects can be achieved by using the both types of phenol-formaldehyde resins. Uralchimplast produces pure resol varnishes and mixed varnishes composed both of resol and Novolak resins.
Foundry
Uralchimplast-Hüttenes Albertus JV offers materials for the complete production cycle of ferrous and non-ferrous metals from manufacturing molds, rods and metals to casting finishing.
