Phenol-formaldehyde novolac resins

Refractories
The widespread use of phenolic resins as a binder in the refractory industry is due to the technical advantages they can offer.

For example:
  • high carbon residue;
  • thermal stability;
  • low toxicity compared to other products from coal tar pitch.

Phenol-formaldehyde resins for refractories are provided as powders, liquids in a variety of solvents, they may contain hardeners and other modifiers.

The range of products is customized to meet customer’s technological capabilities.

Friction Materials

Resistance and thermal stability of phenolic resins are the key performance elements in friction materials manufacturing.

Resins are valued for the production of:

• clutch lining;

• drum brake lining;

• disk brake pads for railway and motor vehicles.

Resins are used in asbestos-base and asbestos-free friction materials.

The range of products is customized to meet customer’s technological capabilities.

Abrasives

Phenolic resins are used in the manufacture of all types of abrasive tools:

• grinding wheels;

• cutoff wheels;

• snagging wheels;

• coated abrasives;

• fibreglass mesh.

Owing to strong adhesion to abrasive grains, our products give abrasive tools excellent strength and performance characteristics. Abrasive tools on a high-strength bakelite bond operate under heavy loads and at high cutting speeds.

Fibreglass mesh is the reinforcing base saturated with phenol-formaldehyde resins for the manufacture of abrasive wheels. The major purpose of the fibreglass mesh is to provide additional mechanical strength which allows to operate the abrasive wheel at high working speeds.

The range of products is customized to meet customer’s technological capabilities.

Sound Insulation

Resin-bound textile felts are used in the automotive industry where their low weight, excellent shapeability and high-temperature life can be used for motor insulation. Specific products make materials resistant to fire and biocides.

Foundry

Uralchimplast-Hüttenes Albertus JV offers materials for the complete production cycle of ferrous and non-ferrous metals from manufacturing molds, rods and metals to casting finishing.

Oil Production

Novolak resins are used in ceramic proppant coating to increase their mechanical strength, lower porosity and protect proppants from backflow. Novolak resins are used either as individual preparations or with hexamine binding powders. Coatings based on Novolak resins can increase the mechanical strength of some proppants by 2-4 times has no impact on reology of gels for hydraulic fracturing. Effects of Novolak resins on specific proppant grades, coating conditions and impacts on reology can be studied by Uralchimplast’s R&D Center.

Graphite Products

Phenol-formaldehyde resins contain the highest carbon proportion than other synthetic polymer materials. Therefore, they are widely used as binders for production of graphite-reinforced plastics and graphite products, glassy carbon products and carbon fibers.

Electrical Insulation

Phenolic resins provide high mechanical strength and electrical insulation properties of electrotechnical sheet materials. Novolak resins used as high-temperature curing agents of epoxy resins allow production of electrotechnical materials with unique properties.

Novolak resins are used as binders for making phenoplast compositions. Modified Novolak resins facilitate the processing of phenoplast molding compositions, increase electrical insulation properties and chemical resistance.
